Juwel Rio 125 Review   by Chloe Heini Taylor

Today we’re checking out the seriously popular Juwel Rio 125 aquarium.

First though, a bit about the company. Juwel are a German company, set up in 1969, they’re one of the main manufacturers of marine fish tanks and tropical fish tanks in Europe. They’ve got a strong history of superior build quality (well they are German eh!!) and good customer care.

Our review will discuss the looks & style of the aquarium, the level of equipment that is provided as standard, ease of maintenance and value for money.

Looks & Style

The Juwel Rio 125 tank looks quite attractive as an aquarium when by itself ie. with no cabinet. It has nice clean simple lines and the internal equipment (by which I’m talking about the filter, filter media, heater and pump) are all nicely hidden inside the filter housing. This makes it all very easy to camouflage behind some strategically place foliage! It must be said though, in my view, that when combined with the manufacturers cabinet, which isn’t the full width of the tank, the unit looks somewhat top heavy and does lose some it’s good looks. The cabinet can be purchased in 4 colours, Black, Beech, Dark Wood & White.

Score – 3/5

Level Of Equipment

The Juwel Rio 125 comes complete with the following standard equipment:-
Juwel High Lite Light Unit,
Juwel High Lite Day (T5 28 watt)
Juwel High Lite Nature (T5 28 watt),
Juwel Bioflow 3.0 Compact Filter,
Juwel Bioflow 600 Pump,
Juwel 100 watt Heater,Variety of filter media

As I already mentioned, the filter, pump and heater are all discreetly housed inside the filter housing which is a very nice touch in an aquarium of this level. The hood has 2 removable flaps making for easy access. It’s manufactured from easy clean pvc which is easy to clean without looking cheap and flimsy.
The quality of kit provided as standard really is impressive and with Juwel’s track record of solid and reliable build quality you shouldn’t need to change anything unless you have the desire to do so.

Score – 4/5

Maintenance

The Juwel again scores well here. Everything has been well engineered. Access for cleaning is good and the tank isn’t too deep for those of us with short arms!!

Score – 4/5

Value For Money

The RRP for the Juwel Rio 125 (tank only) is £255.27 but you ought to be looking to pay about the £200 mark. The cabinet has a RRP of £114.33 but can be purchased for around the £86 mark or for both the tank & cabinet the RRP is £369.60 but aim for the £260 mark.

Score – 4/5

Overall

I score Juwel Rio 125 – 15/20 which is a really healthy score for a tropical fish tank of this size. The well considered design and excellent value for money makes this either a fantastic starter aquarium or ideal for someone with limited space or time to maintain a larger aquarium.
