Fish Tank Hydroponics
Home Aquaponics Systems How-To by Abbie Morris
Basic introduction to what is Aquaponics Systems
Aquaponics systems is a very exciting idea where it combine fish rearing with hydroponics systems. If you are not familiar with hydroponics, it basically mean growing plants without soil, as its name suggested, but using only water. The reason why people should be moving on the road to either aquaponics systems or hydroponics systems is because we only have limited fertile soil and it is not environmental friendly and yet costly to fertilize soil using artificial fertilizer and etc. In addition, most fertilizer doesn’t provide us with good plants and is not as healthy as plant from this system where it will be organic.
How to setup the system
Setting up a home aquaponics systems can be as simple or as complex as you want it to be, it mainly depends on the scale of your aquaponics systems. For what every
household can do is to setup a basic, small scale, yet productive home aquaponics systems to get started, and grow from there. You only need a few basic tools to get started,
a fish tank with a motor pump and filter, two piping, a filter, and a grow bed for the plant. The whole concept is very simple, you want the fish tank water to
go through a filter and pump up to the grow bed where the plant sits in, this is because you want to filter out some solid waste by the fish before it goes into the plant.
The grow bed should at all times be on top of the fish tank so the water can automically go back into the fish tank with the help of gravity. You really need two piping, one from
the fish tank to the grow bed, and the other from the grow bed back to the fish tank. Sounds straightforward ain’t it?
Benefit of the Systems
There are lots of advantage for having a home aquaponics systems, one of the huge gain is that you can enjoy fresh and organics vegetables (no pesticides and fertilizer) from your home with very LOW cost maintaining your systems. In addition to that, you can have fresh fish to eat as well, if you don’t feel like eating the fish, you can definitely sell it off. One of the most crucial of all, the systems is definately environmental friendly as you use a lot less water compare to conventional farming, and you don’t need any fertilizer and pesticides.
