To use this filter, you must first rinse and squeeze the sponge under clear water and easily slip the sponge on to the strainer. However, if you are using it with an airstone, you must connect the airstone first to the bottom of the bull's eye then continue to connect the bull's eye to the top of the strainer. In this, a pump, airline tubing, and airstone are needed. If you are using it with a power head, you can attach the power head directly to the lift tube. For maintenance, you must rinse the sponge with cool, running tap water weekly. Never use hot or cold water nor use soap or detergent when rinsing the sponge as this will only destroy the bacteria which colonize the sponge.
